American tech giant Microsoft has announced a large investment in Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America. Under the “Microsoft My Brazil” program, the company is going to invest 2.70 billion US dollars or 270 crore rupees in the country in 3 years.

This money will mainly be spent on developing Microsoft’s cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in the country. This is Microsoft’s biggest investment in the country of 210 million people.

If AI technology is widely adopted in Brazil, this technology could contribute up to 4.2 percent to the country’s economic growth by the end of this decade. Recent years have seen significant progress in the communications technology sector in Brazil. For example, thanks to Elon Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink, internet service has reached many remote areas of the country. As a result of this, the law and order situation in those regions has improved as well as the development has touched the local economy.

It should be noted that in 2020, this world’s leading technology company initiated the “Microsoft My Brazil” program. The recently announced investment is also a part of this programme. This reflects Microsoft’s long-term commitment to the South American country.

Microsoft said that they will build more extensive infrastructure for cloud and AI technology in various data centers in the state of Sao Paulo. Besides, 5 million people will be trained in AI in the next 3 years. Microsoft Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Satya Nadella said, “We are committed to transforming AI technology in Brazil and ensuring that the benefits of this technology benefit everyone.”

Meanwhile, this huge investment by Microsoft has been greatly appreciated by the Brazilian government. Geraldo Alcmin, the country’s vice-president, said Microsoft’s investment proves Brazil is capable of leading the AI sector around the world. He also emphasized that Brazil has the capacity to supply the renewable energy needed to keep the datacenters active.
