In countries like ours, it’s common for children to share the bed with their parents until they are older. However, in many Western countries, children are encouraged to sleep independently much earlier.

But which approach is better?

Many parents believe that having their child sleep with them will prevent nighttime fears, ensuring they sleep well. Additionally, it allows them to monitor their child’s sleep closely. However, experts suggest that this belief might not be entirely accurate. According to researchers, children should start getting used to sleeping in their own beds by the age of 18 months.

Studies indicate that sharing the same bed for extended periods can hinder the development of independent sleep habits. This can also restrict children from moving freely during sleep, which is crucial for the natural physiological processes of falling asleep and waking up. Moreover, in some instances, co-sleeping with adults increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), a tragic event where an infant dies unexpectedly during sleep.

By the age of two, it is generally recommended for children to sleep separately from their parents. However, transitioning to this stage can be challenging, requiring parents to take gradual steps.

How to Ease the Transition

To help children adjust, it’s a good idea to start by placing a separate bed in the parents’ room. This allows them to adapt to sleeping independently while still feeling close to their parents. Once the child reaches three or four years old, they can move into their own room.

The child’s room should be designed in a way that makes them feel comfortable and secure. Decorate the room with furniture that suits the child’s preferences, and include their favorite pictures, toys, and books. The bed should be at a height that’s easy for the child to access, and the lighting should be soft to avoid nighttime fears. Additionally, the reading and play areas should feel open and welcoming.

For added security, it’s best to keep the child’s room close to the parents’ bedroom, ensuring the child can easily call for help if needed. The path between the two rooms should be clear of obstacles, preventing any accidents.
