Operation Devil Hunt: 591 More Arrested in Nationwide Crackdown

In the ongoing special operation named Operation Devil Hunt, security forces have arrested an additional 591 individuals, bringing the total number of arrests to 2,849 since the operation commenced on Saturday night.

Key Developments:

According to the police headquarters, the arrests were made between Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. The joint forces have also seized a significant cache of weapons, including:

  • 1 foreign pistol
  • 1 Chinese rifle
  • 2 LG guns
  • 4 one-shooter firearms
  • 1 magazine
  • 3 rounds of ammunition
  • Various local weapons

In addition to Operation Devil Hunt, law enforcement agencies have arrested another 1,095 individuals over the past 24 hours in connection with various cases.

Background of the Operation:

Launched on February 8, Operation Devil Hunt is a coordinated effort by security forces nationwide. The decision to initiate this special operation followed a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs, prompted by a violent incident in Gazipur where students and civilians were attacked.

Government’s Stance:

Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the Home Affairs Advisor, emphasized that Operation Devil Hunt will continue until the nation is completely free from criminal elements. The operation aims to restore peace and security across the country.

Incident Triggering the Operation:

The operation was intensified after an incident on the night of February 7 in Gazipur, where 15-16 students were assaulted near the residence of former Liberation War Minister Mozammel Haque. According to leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement, the students had responded to reports of a robbery and were attacked while trying to intervene.
