More than 5,000 wireless device ‘pagers’ have been detonated across Lebanon. A pager is a type of small telecommunication device. Eight people have been killed in this incident so far. In addition, 2 thousand 750 people were injured. These included several fighters and Iran’s ambassador to Beirut. Lebanon’s Ministry of Health confirmed the matter.
This explosion occurred in different areas of the country for about an hour. The explosion started around 3:45 pm local time on Tuesday. The devices continued to explode over the next hour.
That afternoon, Lebanese Information Minister Ziad Makari condemned the detonation of the pagers. Handheld devices have been used in Lebanon primarily by Hezbollah and others to send messages. He termed this incident as a planned ‘Israeli aggression’.
However, after the incident, the country’s armed group Hezbollah warned of severe retaliation. The group said in a statement that Israel would be “justly punished” for the blasts.
